AnimeTrivia.app / Product platformCase study

One moderated question library, 250,000 plays and counting.

AnimeTrivia.app is a free, searchable product for two kinds of people: players testing what they remember and hosts looking for complete question-and-answer lists. One moderated library powers both experiences.

01/Origin and ambition

A fan ritual needed product infrastructure

AnimeTrivia.app began with a straightforward fan instinct: the energy of recurring trivia nights deserved a permanent home online. The team wanted a free platform that could keep expanding across anime, genres, contributors, and search demand without becoming difficult to maintain.

HD Web helped translate that ambition into product decisions, implementation, search architecture, and an ongoing stewardship model. The platform has been live since April 2022 and still ships new work as the question library and its audience grow.

02/One library, two experiences

The question library serves two different jobs

A single fan-written, moderator-reviewed source feeds an interactive play experience and indexable question-and-answer pages. The content stays consistent while each path is shaped around a different intent.

Shared source

Moderated question library

2,380+ hand-written questions across 130+ anime, organized once and reused across both product paths as of August 2026.

For players

Play a quiz

A focused game loop reveals each answer, asks the player to score themselves, tracks progress, and carries results into saved history and friend challenges when they use an account.

  • Progress and results
  • Saved history
  • Friend challenges

For hosts

Use the answers

A complete Q&A page lets someone prepare a pub night, club event, or fan gathering at a glance. The same unique content also gives search engines a useful, indexable page for each anime.

  • Complete question-and-answer lists
  • Host-friendly scanning
  • Direct path back to play
  • Indexable anime pages

03Product journey

The product journey, start to finish

01 / Finding the right game

Several ways into the same library

Search, the anime database, genre pages, Quick Play, and random play create several useful starting points. A player can look up one series, browse by taste, or skip the choice entirely.

The shipped game builder lets players assemble a game from anime already in the moderated library. A separate builder for fully user-authored quizzes is a future feature; it is not presented here as live.

02 / The play loop

A simple interaction carries a longer relationship

Each question asks the player to recall first, reveal the answer, and mark whether they got it. Progress and results make the round understandable without turning fan trivia into a high-pressure test.

Accounts extend that loop across visits with saved progress, score history, best runs, and friend challenges. The quiz remains free and playable without an account.

03/Community and trust

The library improves through a visible knowledge loop

Community participation expands the library, but moderation and feedback protect its usefulness. Contributor credit keeps a human name on every submission.

  1. 01

    Contribute

Fans submit questions for an anime already represented in the library.

  2. 02

    Review

Administrators check questions and answers before they enter the shared source.

  3. 03

    Publish and credit

Approved questions are published with contributor attribution when an account is connected.

  4. 04

    Play or reuse

The same question can appear in a quiz round and on the corresponding Q&A page.

  5. 05

    Flag and improve

Players can mark a bad question or report a specific error so moderators can revisit it.

04/Publishing beyond trivia

A place to read as well as play

The custom CMS supports both quiz material and editorial publishing. Articles, guest writers, author profiles, guides, explainers, and character analysis give contributors another way to participate and create new discovery paths into the site.

Treating editorial work as part of the same product keeps the experience coherent while allowing different content types to develop at their own pace.

05/A maintained product

Shipping was the start of the product relationship

Since April 2022, HD Web has continued to support AnimeTrivia.app through feature work, content infrastructure, search strategy, and platform maintenance. The site now includes accounts, challenges, saved progress, Quick Play, a library-based game builder, community workflows, and editorial publishing.

That ongoing cadence matters because the product is a living system. Its question count, anime coverage, play total, articles, and search positions continue to change.

Client perspective

We came to HD Web to get help creating our vision for our trivia website; after a few short weeks, they had a prototyped demo, and once we saw it, we knew we made the right choice hiring them.

07/The next chapter

The library is still becoming a broader creation platform

AnimeTrivia.app remains actively maintained. The immediate work is to keep expanding the moderated library, improve discovery and play, support contributors, and respond to what search and product behaviour reveal.

A fully user-authored quiz builder remains a future feature. Today, the shipped builder creates games from the existing moderated question library; the distinction protects the accuracy of this case study as the product evolves.

Build for continued use

Build a product people come back to

If your product needs to serve different user intents from one reliable content system, HD Web can help shape the strategy, implementation, and ongoing work.
